How the care groups work

Succulent dry cycle entries have strongly water-storing leaves and need the deepest dry-down. Dry-tolerant thick leaf entries also store water but are less extreme. Balanced moisture entries should dry through the upper portion of the pot without remaining bone-dry for long. Humidity-sensitive small leaf trailers have fine roots and small leaves, so repeated severe drying is more damaging.

Important name corrections
  • Kew currently treats Peperomia rubella as a synonym of Peperomia verticillata, although the nursery trade may use the names as if they are different plants.
  • Peperomia scandens is treated as a synonym of the accepted name Peperomia serpens.
  • Beetle peperomia is frequently sold as P. angulata; Kew accepts P. quadrangularis for the taxon used here.
  • “Hope” is a cultivated trade plant, so it is listed as Peperomia ‘Hope’ rather than presented as a wild species.
Is every Peperomia pet-safe?

ASPCA specifically lists Peperomia obtusifolia as non-toxic to cats and dogs. Peperomias are widely treated as pet-friendly houseplants, but a correct plant identification still matters, and eating any plant material can cause gastrointestinal upset. Confirm uncertain plants with a veterinarian or poison-control resource.
